Pros/Cons putting 2500 suspension on 1500
Hey Fellas,
I've got a C1500 with the 305 and I'm wondering if it's worth it/what the drawbacks might be to putting the leaf springs from a 2500 on a 1500? I've already swapped in 2500 shocks, would it be worth it to do the springs as well? Will it degrade ride handling/ride quality/performance? [EDIT] I should mention that I'm referring to the rear shocks/springs. Would it be worth it to do the front as well? Much thanks, Alex |

Re: Pros/Cons putting 2500 suspension on 1500
It would help to know what you usually use the truck for. If you normally drive it unloaded, then 2500 springs would be overkill. If you are normally loaded up in the back with either bed weight or trailer, then it will help control sagging. However, if you are trying to increase your towing/hauling capacity over the truck's recommended limits, it won't do...your 305 is the limiting factor.
If you want a firmer ride without jumping to the 2500 springs, try swapping for the K1500 (4wd) springs. Another option is to install air-adjustable shocks like the MaxAir shocks I have. This gives me more flexibility in handling loads. However, these can change your rear ride height up to 2"...headlight adjustments will be needed once you find your desired firmness. Hope this helps!

Re: Pros/Cons putting 2500 suspension on 1500
Thanks jdmccright. I'm probably only using the truck to haul furniture occasionally, and most of the time the bed will be unloaded. I just thought that it might be worth it since I could get them for so cheap, but I might think about the K1500 springs instead!
As for air springs, I've got some on my caprice wagon and they work great, although for the truck I'd prefer to not have to deal with adjusting them haha. |

Re: Pros/Cons putting 2500 suspension on 1500
I did that with my 88 gmc k1500. reason was I have a 10000lb gvw trailer, i don't use it often and can pull it with half ton springs . I also thought as long as i'm doing the work why not upgrade.
Downside is the truck sits much higher, i picked up 3-4 inches, i didn't measure before so a drop hitch is something you need. also if you thought they sat tail high before it gets worse. new keys for the torsion bars are a spring time project. |

Instead of stiffing your truck up with a rough ride with the heavey springs.
The make a over load kit and also air shocks and even air bag kits that will carry extra load when needed. Bigger or stiffer shock do not help carry weight.

+1 on air bags. I've put them on my 98 K1500 for when I tow my trailer and they are well worth the money.
