88-91 si

well i was at work talked to this guy he was selling a red si (forgot what year, guess that happens when you smell mcdonalds grease for 6 hours) well it had no rust and it needed a little body work and the guy is sick of it so hopfully he will let it go for cheap.

question 1.

Would a zc swap be worth it in a si?

question 2.
if the answer for number 1. is no, what kinda boost could a freshly rebuilt si motor hold?

question 3.

the 98-00 si's have b16's right? could i find one of those and throw it in the hatch?

thx
sorry to bore you with my same lame questions

answer 1

not really. no huge jump in power in stock trim, but if you plan on turboing the ZC

answer 2

not a lot in stock trim, but what honda can?

answer 3

yes, the 4th gen civic and CRX was the first car to ever offer the b16 in it, but never here in the US. i would get a first gen one though, not one from the later civics, because the OBD conversions and the transmission differences would be more difficult

you can tune the ZC a bit better cause its got DOHC, but then again, you can get more parts for the Si motor

Coming from someone who has a Zc....
  • No wiring changes in an Si
  • No motor mounts needed
  • Si trans can be used
  • Si computer can be used
  • Zc is much cheaper than B series
  • No vtec or electronics to tune......just drive

For all intents and purposes, the Zc is a direct replacement for the Si motor.

The Zc is a good platform for turbo, provided you take the necessary steps to ensure the motor is up to the task. I am currently building my Zc with a low compression headgasket 8.5/1 in preparation for the Greddy Turbo kit I will be installing later this year.

I get "why dont you get vtec?" all the time, but honestly, I like the Zc better. Very simple, reliable motor with no headaches. Just my $0.02

Actually, the JDM 2nd Gen Integra just pipped the EF9 Civic and EF8 CRX to the post getting a B16A. Its designation was the XSi. I understand that there was a months difference. You could use the gearbox from this with a late model Si/VTiR B16A, its designation is S1 and runs slightly different ratios helping it to get out of the hole a bit quicker than the Y1 but without the legs/top end of the Y1. Get a front cut and swap the Si Tranny for a Y1 and you'd be ready to roll

Personally, if I was dropping a B16A in... I wouldn't. I'd turbo a ZC or drop in a B18C5. I've been looking at the latest cars to hit the market and the B16A, while an awesome motor for its time, is past its use by date in terms of power for $$$. ZC is a cheap alternative with less of the hassle and can be turbo'd on the cheap.

Watch me get flamed for those comments

I have a ZC in my Si as well, it blows the stock Si motor away.
I belive it is worth it, Problem_Si said it, trouble free install, very straight foward.
I also have the B16a in my 92. Thant motor is awesome too.

the zc is not a good motor to turbo stock. if you replaced the rods they'd be good, but the stock rods are really skinny and would prolly break.

True, Zc rods are a little wimpy.

But if you take the right steps, you can still use them.

I will be running the Greddy 92-95 Si kit with a lower compression (8.5/1). I will also be running a profec B controller with 4psi for daily driven, and 7psi for "angry" driving. When all is said and done, I should expect to see about 200hp at the wheels. Thats plenty enough juice for me.

I've heard that the most that the zc can push in stock form is 9psi. Even that is pushing it....at least thats my opinion.

One thing is for certain, the DOHC motors are much easier to tune and dial in, because of the extra cam. SOHC motors are great platforms, its just a little harder to pull serious power from them.

Id swap the Zc, and prep it for turbo.....but Im biased
