Engine noise at high rpm
Hi I have an 03 Ram with a 4.7. Engine began knocking to the point I got a rebuilt one and had it put in. Now new engine has a ticking sound at high rpm. Engine has good oil pressure. Old engine went bad due to a clogged oil pick up tube. What could be causing the ticking sound? Need to get truck back on road asap.

Re: Engine noise at high rpm
Some things to consider for ticking on top of the engine:
- not enough oil getting to top of engine i.e. clogged oil pickup/passages. - not enough pressure to get enough oil on top i.e. weak oil pump/worn bearings. - lower intake gasket leak, if it is noisy upon load and going uphill, but normal at idle. Might be any of these or none of these. Does it have adjustable valves? It might be a good idea to pull the oil pan and make sure the "new" engine doesn't have a clogging pickup as well. Hope this helps.
