Unhappy 1989 Accord Diesels

Hello anyone,
Recently my 1989 honda accord lx started to diesel after I shut it off by dieseling I mean that it is after-running or the engine still goes a bit after I shut it off. My car is an automatic with 165,000miles on it, and it's carborated. The car rev's up high and hits about 3500rpm's I changed the Oil the same day that it started happening and fixed a side panel that had been bashed in when a car hit me and ran off. I'm not sure what is causing it. It started after I was out on a backroad where I live and I seen some foxes so I stopped my car to check em out and shut it off and I heard it diesel and it's done it ever since. It was kind of a sudden stop but not anymore then my usual stops.

So far I have checked the Idle Timer and turned it three clicks in each direction with no change in idle. (also if I have to get back in there to check out the idle timer again any tips on an easier way to get in and mess with it. The air-filter housing is in the way it's hard to get to.

Investigated the vacuum hoses for leaks but there are so damn many of them but I checked most of em out. I don't thinks that's the problem.

ALso if anyone here knows where the ECU is on a 1989 honda accord that'd help me out alot I have a haynes manual but it isn't worth a damn shit when it comes to certain things I ordered a chiltons today and I expect that to be much better.

Any help or suggestions anyone could offer would be appreciated.

I have used higher octane gas before this problem occured but not since it has occured I will give it a try though. Recently as I've been watching the problem I have found that it only occurs when the engine has warmed up. If the engine isn't warm it won't diesel. The engine doesn't get any hotter then usual though. This leads me to believe that something opens when it is heated and then it doesn't close until the engine is completely cool ( I could be wrong on this though) my car could just be screwd.

This problem is really starting to drive me nutz. I haven't found anyway of fixing it so far. Another thing I noticed is when driving it, it will knock really hard and unless I let off the gas it will knock harder and harder. It has done that before but recently after this started it does it alot more often.

I'm going to investigate the throttle linkage tonight. thank you for your reply lorunner:bandit:

I drive a 1988 Accord LX. I've got the Honda service manual to it. I would think it would be about the same as I doubt they changed much over the course of one year. I'll poke around and see if I can find where the ECU is located.

Pretty much from what I have gathered from alot of searching and talking to others is that there is no ecu on my 1989 honda accord because it is carborated.

THe ecu is located under the drivers seat....but it wont help you much because the carburated accords dont have a self diagnosis computer....

you say it knocks when on the gas??
check the timing and the distributor cap and rotor...

also there is a anti-diesel solenoid on the car to but i dont know where its located ...id have to take my ass outside and get my manual from my car otherwise to look..

also if the idle is way to high it will diesel as well .....shutting it off with all that gas going in the cyclinders will ignite itself

Yep just joined 3-geeze about four days ago they have helped me out quite a bit. As far as my car goes for some reason it just quit dieseling and the high idling a few days ago it's like the car fixed itself. I need to adjust the timing, and the idle, alot of stuff is out of sync I should just bring it in for a tune-up now.

What it does is when I'm driving once in a while it will start knocking and then the engine will make it feel like there's vibration running through the entire spine of the car. If I hold my foot on the gas the knocking gets worse but if I release it and then put it back on it quits most the time. Lately however if I'm sitting at a stoplight for too long the engine will start pulling me forward a bit. I think this is caused by the timing being off alot.
