98 engine worn heat up
98, the engine never gets into the operational range, close to it at highway speed. i checked to see if my fans were stuck on , the were not. i checked and replaced the rad cap, no change. then i replaced the thermostat with an aftermarket, no change. i then replaced the thermostat with an AC/DELCO , no change. i blocked off part of the rad with cardboard, no change. poor heat inside the van. where is the heat going?
thanking all in advance who reply. Best Regards G Last edited by addd673; 01-21-2011 at 12:49 PM. |

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
sorry should have mentioned the heat in the van matches what the guage indicates. heater must be on hi 100% of the time. i

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
thanks peprius4030, i think the sender unit is a little wacked.(i can live with) now about poor heat in the car...... this is embarising.... the cabin air filters looked like a couple of filty dirty grey work socks, i remember they where white in colour when i put them in. once i removed them the air flow and heat were great.

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
Nice, Mine is the same way. I suspect the guage is bad, but I dont care, I know how it operates, runs right around the lower end of the scale and if you run thru drive thru it will come up to just a hair over 1/2 if you sit there long enough it will go up to about 3/4 scale when the fans kick in bringing it back down. I have had a scantool in livedata that shows a sweep from the bottom most tick to 1/2 scale is about 2* difference......... 197-199.....

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
Not sure if understand what your talking about but on my 98 Tans Sport which I drove for almost 8 years never any engine or transmission troubles, never burned a drop of oil between changes, had tons of get up and go !
Now I have a 02 Silhouette, 2 months so far... Both always read just above the quarter mark on the temp. gauge ! And my Trans Sport always did. Didn't matter if it was -20 or 30C out. In the summer time it would climb a bit in traffic if I didn't have the A/C on, remedy was to turn on the A/C.. then right back down to above the quarter mark it went. (and I didn't actually have to turn on the a/c all I had to do was set it to defrost setting) Just to add.. My ol' 98 Trans Sport had barely any internal heat (froze in winter) where my new 02 Silo has plenty ! Cheers and God Bless Wayne. |

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
Defrost still runs the compressor and radiator fan to pull moisture out of the air......
Mine takes awhile to get heat in the cabin also..... I might flush the heater core, might not, I dont really care a whole lot about it.........

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
Remember too that the guage is different than most other temp guages out there. Most go from 100 degrees to 260. This one is from 160 degrees to 260. At 1/4 that puts it right at 185 degrees which is where it should be. I will agree that these vans don't push much heat. I am going to have to try removing the cabin filter and see if that helps.

Re: 98 engine worn heat up
I removed the cabin air filter and it made big difference in airflow on mine, temperature was relatively unaffected.....
