New Gas Odor?

I recently had the brake and fuel lines replaced on my 1996 Honda Accord. The muffler was also replaced.

I picked the car up on Friday (end of day) and drove it on Saturday. At end of day I parked the car in my garage and it sat there Sunday and Monday with the garage door closed.

This morning, the garage smelled heavily of gas. There were two puddles in back of the vehicle: one near the muffler and the other about 6 inches forward (toward the front of the vehicle). The puddle that was furthest towards the front of the vehicle smelled of gasoline. As it is winter here there is water on the floor (around the wheels)

The car was towed in. The mechanics found no gas leaks, they did find an issue with the muffler which would cause it to leak water and they have fixed it. They have no idea why we would get a gas smell.

They will keep it over night and look for puddles in the AM.

My question: does anything come to mind that might cause a gas odor that I might have them look at? Both my wife and I smelled the heavy smell of gas - but the technicians can't find anything wrong.

At issue is the cost to have had the brake and fuel lines put in, the odor and the safety of the car.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: New Gas Odor?

The fuel lines are common to break right near the fuel tank, towards the front under a plastic shield. Any good mechanic should see the issue. Hopefully it was just fumes from gas being spilled during the fuel line replacement.

Evap canister?

i would personally bring it to another shop to look at it... that way there is no bias with the shop trying to protect their rep and get out of free repairs...
