Looking for a dependable work car... 97-2000 Wagon????

So i have a 140 mile round trip i make every day and have been doing it for 13 years. I have mainly been driving early 90's Buick Lesabres and have been pretty pleased with them. I can squeak out 28mpg since my drive is all highway, not bad...


The time has come for a new work car and i have been looking at getting an Escort Wagon. I do alot of icefishing and other stuff that is making me look at the wagons. I also do not have alot of cash, another reason for finding a low-mileage Escort


I would assume that all generation Escorts have been good for quite a few miles. I have been told by a few that i want to be looking at the 97-2002 with the 2.0 Single Cam, not the Dual Cam.


Just though i would stop in and ask you guys for some opinions. Especially engine reliability, mpg (Auto/Man), and anything i should be looking for.... Thanks in advance

I had a 94 once with the 1.9 (I think) had a automatic that bit the dust and converted to a 5 speed and it ran again for a long time. real good on gas too.

My '93 wagon runs fine with 318,000 miles on it.

Manual shift >250k on a '94 sedan. If you're in the rust-belt, beware of the rear strut towers. Besides wrecks, (and the cost of automatic transmission rebuilds,) that's the one of the major, major things that permanently takes them off the roads. Unfortunately it's impossible to ascertain the true condition of the strut tower unless it's disassembled.
