Question Starting Problem 1998 Maxima

I just recently got this problem with the engine cutting out right when starting it. It runs for a second then cuts. I have to do this a couple times before it starts or let the engine crank for a bit before letting it idle on its own. Any suggestions?

A) Not enough fuel is getting to the engine on start B) Spark plugs/Battery need to be replaced. C) Ignition system... hopeful not that. Those are my best guesses... I'm no mechanic.

Yeah that sounds like a fuel Filter and/or Fuel Pump to me.

Clean your throttle body. Most idle related problems are due to dirty throttle bodys. Goto www.motorvate.ca for a nice write up on how this is done.

If that doesn't solve your start and idle issue, remove and clean the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve). It's main purpose is to maintain the correct idle speed for you.

I replaced the air filter and the spark plugs and still does me no good; but once the car is warmed up for the day it is the sweetness. I hope its not the fuel pump, i dont think it is the pump because this only happens when it is the first start of the day. Ill try to clean out all that idle relater stuff and let you guys know if that helped. The idle at the first start is around 1100 but then calms down to between 500-600 when the engine is warmed up.

Thanks for the great idea NJMAXSELTD, the cleaning of the throttle body was cheap and oh so effective; i reccomend the others that have the same problem to do it. The car now has faster gains in the lower RPM's, TIME TO RACE!
