2 quick questions

I just read "How does my selec-trac work" by fredjacksonsan.

#1 I assume the quadra-trac in my 98 works the same as full-time in the selec-trac?

New to Jeep...was just wondering.

#2 When I turn somewhat sharp, my front end wheel hops like four wheel drive on dry pavement...I am sure my front is out of alignment. Will this cause it to do that? I used to have a Ford Explorer with all wheel drive that did not do this. I am turning no sharper than I have to unless I am on snow/ice.

Re: 2 quick questions

First, select-trac is a 4WD system that mostly 2WD with 4WD to be used on wet or slippery surfaces or 4 LOW for extra torque in loose conditions like sand or mud. Grand Cherokees with the 4.0 came with the NP 242 Select-trac transfer case. Grand Cherokee's with either a 5.2 V8 or the 5.9 came with the NP-249 Qudra-trac transfer case. It has 2 modes, 4WD high or All-time 4WD/AWD and 4 LOW.

If you have a V8, the binding you feel during a sharp turn is because the viscous coupler inside the transfer case is going bad, a common problem on the NP-249 and 247s used on 1999-2004 V8 Grand Cherokees. It costs around $1100 to replace to VC and for that price, you can buy 5 NP-242's for that price. There is a conversion that can done to replace the transfer cases and give you slightly better fuel mileage and less wear on the drivetrain. Worse thing with the binding VC is it will break your front CV axles. I've already replaced my LF axle twice already within a year.

Re: 2 quick questions

Freak nasty,

Thanks for the reply. Been busy & just seen it.

I was afraid you were gonna say that. Guess i'll have to explore the options and decide which way I want to go.

Thanks again.

Re: 2 quick questions

I see you live in MO and I'm sure you have snow, so you'll need 4WD but as soon you have warmer weather, I would disconnect the front driveshaft so you don't have to worry about severe crow hop due to the binding VC.
