Only engine I can think that GM puts in Grand Ams with a belt driven water pump is the 3.1L or the 3.4L in newer cars. The sensor under the PS pump is the cam sensor. Since it is disconnected I feel that this sensor was shorted out so someone unplugged it forcing the computer to default to other sensors. This sensor determines the fuel injector pulse on start up after the first couple of revolutions of the engine. Your engine also has 2 crank sensors used in spark timing also. I would take a good look at the sensors and their wiring making sure the wires are not broken or shorted. A good chance when the water pump broke it could of taken out the front crank sensor.
