01, 02, 03 Dakota Brakes
I have three Dakotas. An 01, 02, and an 03. One V6 and two V8's. When they are first started in the morning, the rear brakes will lock up on them for the first few stops. Then, they dont do it after they have warmed up. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

did you ever figure out what was wrong? You could have a bad proportioning valve.

Re: 01, 02, 03 Dakota Brakes
My first thought would be old brake fluid. Especially if you live in colder weather right now. The moisture in old brake fluid will freeze, causing the problem in the rear drums. I would completely flush the old brake fluid, bleed the system, and then see how it does. You will probably notice better feel from the brakes. Almost like a new truck.

Re: 01, 02, 03 Dakota Brakes
With any luck, you have already solved this problem. If not, a rear brake drum inspection is in order. The self adjusters do not work. I adjust the rear brakes once a year (I have a low mileage 2001). Many folks have driven their Dakotas to the point that the front rotors warped because the the rear brakes were not providing the intended braking forces.
Both of my front calipers locked up and had to be replaced. Bleeding brakes on an annual basis is a good preventative maintenance measure. Cheers, Burt |
