Going into the redline

Well, today i was driving my 1.4gl pos and I did a mis shift at 3rd gear and my revs went straight up to 7800rpm, no revlimiter then! Thing is my car reds at about 6800rpm....

after i was like oh shit, but to my surprise, my clutch pedal has decided to go softer and also doesnt make that horrible noise everytime u press it down anymore...

anyone know what would have caused this?
and do u think i would have bent my valves or anything?

Well.. Im not too much of an expert on manual cars, but I can tell you some advice a college guy told meeh (he's a dyno tester and owns a subaru wrx). Told me that running redlines can be quite healthy for a car, burning of uneccessary carbon build up in engines, and exhaust. I felt the same thing with my lx after doing that for a week after I saved the car from the dreaded clutches of a Pastor's daughter. *shivers*

yes, running to ur red-line every so often IS fine for the car. but taking it to over 1000 rpm past redline is not. that is exactly how my frien bent the valves in his 2000 ITR.

jus make sure over the next two days or so nothing else acts up, an that ur car is still running jus as strong as before.

its cuz u stressed it quite a bit having it grab that high. it'll be fine, but i would make sure ur shifts in the next few weeks stay smooth an that u don't feel any grinding or difficulites getting it into gear.

I wouldnt worry about the engine, with the right cam and carbs it will go that high on its own.

The g/box should be sweet as well, but you might have done something to the clutch.

My guess is you've just cleaned the face of the plate, the high revs and sudden engament have simply blown off all the crap that would have been accumlating from regular driving.
This is actualy a good thing, and as long as it still works then enjoy the lack of noise.

Its also possible its done thing to the thrust bearing, but hey if it still works dont worry about it!

ewwwww :apuke:

If your foot was on the clutch then and you heard it gind as you missed the gear then your set things spinning at quite high speeds, and as you came off the clucth it all had to slow down and match back up again, so I guessing that you have done any damage to it, just scrubed a bit of material of the disc face.
