Exclamation 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

We just were given this van by our church as we were unable to take our grandkids to school - all other cars are broke down.

I counted out the blips and here's the codes I have:
12
21
32
55 - end of message

Can someone please tell me what these mean and what I need to do next? We don't have a bunch of money right now so we need to do this cheap!!! All help is SOOO appreciated!!!

Re: 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

Don't worry about 12 and 55. They are always there and they are not fault codes.

Code 21 has to do with the O2 sensor circuit and 32 is for the EGR valve.

I would recommend going to Advance Auto to get a free loaner code reader. Code 21 is very broad and the code reader they will lend you can narrow it down. For example, if it is a bad O2 sensor, it can tell you if it's the upstream or downstream one.

Good luck.

We've called NAPA and went to Schucks/O'Reilly's and they don't have a reader for this. I'm hoping we are looking at the correct plug-in (under dash, next to steering column) it is square with 6 metal flat prongs sticking OUT (male). All the readers they have are also male ends - nothing female. Is this the correct plug? Should I be asking for a ODB1 reader? Or is it something more specific?

Re: 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

This vehicle is OBD1 and only has 1 O2 sensor. The OBD1 connector is in the engine compartment; possibly by the relays onthe driver side inner fender area. Here's wiring diagrams of the eng computer system. Check the egr solenoid and make sure it is plugged in.

So do we just replace the EGR Valve?

Re: 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

Do you have power to the egr solenoid with the key in the run position? Dark Blue wire with a white tracer. This wire is spliced further back in the harness. Grey wire with a yellow tracer goes to the computer. The computer grounds the wire to turn the solenoid on and allows vacuum to flow to the valve.Testing is what should be done. I don't like to just throw parts at a problem; so I will never tell anyone to just replace a part.

Re: 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

When I had my Grand Voyager, Also '94, I put 240K Mi on it......had to replace the EGR twice in that time.....Solenoid would get stuck.....I would test it by checking the voltage at the plug with the key in run and if there was voltage present (always was) I would suck on the vacuum port (electrical connector needs to be plugged in with key in "run") to see if it physically moved (never did). On the bright side, it is an easy part to replace, two bolts, one electrical connector, one vacuum line and 10 minutes work, includes opening and closing the hood. The EGR code probably is the real fault, the O2 code is probibly just an artifact of that code and will go away once the EGR is repaired.

Re: 94 Chrysler Town & Country Engine ERROR CODES

So we have replaced the EGR valve and oxygen sensor. After clearing all codes, ran great for a while (no check engine). About 3000 miles later, check engine again, Error code 21. It always happens when coming up a 3 mile STEEP hill.
Any ideas?
I should mention this vehicle has 144,xxx and is getting about 25mpg highway right now.
