'02 Astro, 50K miles on it, wouldn't start and wouldn't be jumped, then later on did start. Battery? Alternator?

We have an '02 Astro with about 50K miles on it. This past Sunday, it wouldn't start. So, we tried to jump it. Still wouldn't start. Tried 3 times to start it while we were charging it. Still wouldn't start.

Later in the afternoon, the hubby went out to try it one more time. And it started. What's up with this? Any ideas?

My husband did think that he was possibly noting over the past few weeks a slight increase in difficulty in starting the van. I never noticed it, so if there was a difficulty, it was VERY slight.

Alternator? Battery? Any other guesses?

When you say it wouldn't start: does the starter turn the engine over and the engine will not run? Or does the starter not make any noise at all?

On Sunday when it wouldn't start, it was making no noise at all. Nothing -- even after jumping the battery. But now it's starting up just fine -- ???. We've got 5 kids we haul around in this van so we want to make sure something's not up.

When it wouldn't turn over, did any of the dash lights come on when you tried to start it?

If we remember right, there were no dash lights that came on at all when we turned the key in the ignition.

First thing is to take the positive and negative battery cables off of the battery. Clean them with a wire brush until they are nice and shiny clean, (battery terminals and cables). Reinstall and tighten them. Post your results and we'll go from there.

OK, will do -- probably tomorrow when we have some light. Thanks for the help!

The cable connections might just be loose, or there might be some "green fuzz" growing on them. Very important that the connection between the cables and the battery terminals are clean and tight.

The hubby cleaned them up and tightened them up, and the van's been starting up beautifully ever since. You were right on! Thanks for the help!
