Diesel Fuel Troubles

I have a 97' Dodge Ram 2500 w/ a 5.9 liter Cummins. I think I ran it out of fuel. After adding fuel I can't seem to get it primed up. I have already replaced the lift pump, but can't seem to get fuel up to the injector pump. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Diesel Fuel Troubles

Charge the batteries up real good, you're going to have to call on them.

I believe the lift pump has a button for manually pumping fuel to the injector pump.
It it feel like it's not pumping very deep, turn the engine over a half turn to get off the fuel pump lobe of the camshaft.
It helps if the fuel filter startts off full of fuel too.
You may have to loosen the fuel inlet connection to the injector pump to relieve the air.

If it pumps better with the front of the truck lower than the back, the fuel lines may be cracking and allowing air in.

Re: Diesel Fuel Troubles

Thank you for your help. As it turned out the first lift pump I bought was faulty, but the second one did the job.

Re: Diesel Fuel Troubles

Well the fuel problem is fixed, but as soon as I fixed that now I have a bad oil leak and I can't find it yet.

Re: Diesel Fuel Troubles

Good work on the lift pump.
Is it leaking at the front or rear of the engine?

Re: Diesel Fuel Troubles

That would be a huge puddle.
Is it leaking going down the road?
