Question Broken Speedo

Well I have the now infamous speedo gauge failure. There are a few options to fix this problem. I can go to the dealer but that costs $$$$$$. I could send it out for repair but I don't want to drive the truck with no dash. With that said if you take the gauge cluster out does it still register the miles when you reinstall the dash?
The third option I have found that is I could replace the stepper motors myself. I have done some soldering in the past but has anyone here done this job? It looks like it is pretty straight forward other than taking the needles of the gauges to replace the motor. Just looking for some feedback as to what direction i should go or attempt the repair my self.

I would find a damaged dash guage cluster for cheap at the scrap yard. then take out the stepper motors all !

with that work you should be successful in the replacing the GM defective cluster motors..

you better practice soldering ..find an old tv and remove some componets on the circuit board...use the soldering tools ......go to radio shack get what tools are required..they will help..solder sucker/solder wick, a small solder iron with temp control..scraping tools /cutters / pliers.. when your done you might start making so money doing this stuff.

the cluster must be connected for vehicle operation !
