stalling

Hello. My neighbor asked me why his car could be stalling when he gets off the highway. It is a 2002 GP SE with the 3.1L. I told him that it could be an idle air control valve, mass air flow sensor, or the TCC could possibly be sticking. Anyone have any other ideas? He said it drives around town fine, but just stalls after getting off of the highway sometimes.

Re: stalling

any Service engine soon light on? If so scan it and post results. If not, have him unplug the MAF with the car off, then start and drive it and see if it goes away. Next step would be to check fuel pressure and the charging system (alt and battery and related wiring).

Thanks Rich. There was a code for lean mixture, but I forget exactly which code it was. I checked the fuel pressure, it's at 52 psi at idle, and when I unhook the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose it jumps up to 60 psi. Is there any better way to check the charging system than just using a volt meter (load test I mean)?

Re: stalling

Did he ever unhook the MAF and drive it? Also, when it stalls, does it chug like if you forgot to push in the clutch on a manual trans? That would indicate a sticking TCC (torque converter clutch lock-up) solenoid.
