Tamiya Lacquer

Just did a test panel where I sprayed in this order: sandable/spotfiller primer (think it was Dupli Color), Krylon, and then Tamiya lacquer. Naturally I sprayed each individually and waited the appropriate amount of time. Was some what surprised the Tamiya lacquer crazed the Krylon. Both are lacquers, right? Though in the back of my mind I seem to recall hearing that Tamiya paints were pretty "aggressive"? Perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised? Good thing I made a test panel! You learn from your mistakes!

Hmm, I could be wrong, but I thought most Krylon paints were enamels?

That depends. If you have a supply of the old version of Krylon it is Acrylic Laquer. That is now labeled as for Industrial Use Only. The new garbage they make as sold in WalMart etc. is crappy old style enamel. For some reason after 30 plus years they decided to ruin a fine product. The new stuff is identifiable by the cone shaped lid. It's hard to find the old stuff but there are online sources for Industrial stuff(which I have one that they just wrapped a new Industrial label over the old stuff.)

Is that a fool proof way (cap shape) to ID the different Krylon paint?

Without a doubt. Also read the directions. The old stuff said recoat any time and the new stuff says recoat within one hour or wait 1 week. That's what tipped me off of the change and I called Krylon and had it confirmed. That's when I started buying up the old stuff. I love the old Gloss White and the Semi Gloss Black especially. That instruction on any paint pretty much tells you it's not lacquer. If you recoat too soon the paint curdles or wrinkles on itself which never happens with lacquer.
