Starting problems 2001 GMC Jimmy

Hello All!

My 2001 Jimmy is giving me fits! It has been having an intermittent starting problem. I turn the key, the dash lights come on, the starter relay engages (clicks) but the engine will not turn over at all. There is voltage at the starter solenoid. This problem was intermittent but now happens all the time and the vehicle is dead in the driveway. My diagnosis is a bad starter/solenoid and needs to be replaced. Any other ideas??

Battery up good and + and - cabels and all conections good?
If so the starter solenoid is bad.
How many miles on starter?
You could check on a solenoid and price one and see if you can even get one.

But I would suggest you get a brand New not rebuilt starter and be done with it.

Re: Starting problems 2001 GMC Jimmy

I had a 93 S-10 Blazer with a similar issue. Here is what I found. When you turn the key and nothing happens, turn the key off and take a metal rod, something like a Tire Iron and reach over the top of the front passenger tire. You may have to move the mud shields out of the way to see the starter. I found that if I gave the solenoid a couple of firm taps, then tried the key again, it would start everytime. The solenoid sits right under the exhaust manifolds and can stick from the heat. I eventually replaced the starter and also installed a heat shield from Autozone over the solenoid. No more trouble.
