89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Hi I'm new to the board. I hope you guys can help me out. I'm trying to help out a friend get her car running again. Here's the problem. I guess the car is stalling out a lot especially when it warms up. She says it starts right up again after it stalls. It also will not go over 2000 rpm. She says it doesn't stall at 2000 rpm but it acts like it is being governed. We have replaced the IAC and the throttle position sensor and that didn't help. The car has the 2.8 ltr motor in it. Thanks so much in advanced.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Welcome to AF. First you need to scan for codes, then test the fuel pressure when it dies out.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Thanks for you response. How do I scan for codes. I know autozone won't scan anything older than a 96 or 95. As for the fuel pressure, what am I looking for when it dies.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
I've had trouble with ignition module and coil packs acting that way on a 3.1 engine...Good Luck

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Well I rented a fuel pressure tester today. I hooked it up to the car. Once I hooked it up I turned the ignition on but didn't start it. It first went to 40 psi then went down to 36 psi. Once I started it up it went to 44 psi and it ran like crap. It wouldn't rev up. It would just die. Then after starting it up a couple of times it went to 37 psi and ran great. It would rev and run. It would even run great when warm. But once the psi went up to 44 psi even when warm it would chug and die. So now I am thinking it may be the fuel pressure regulator.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
did you check pressure with engine running with the fpr vacuum unpluged??
is the vacuum line wet with gas??

No I didn't. Where is the regulator at on this car? What would happen with the regulator vacuum line unplugged? |

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
A no vac situation to the press reg would cause high fuel pressure, it is part of the fuel rail.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Hmm so maybe the vac line is broken or loose. I will have to check before putting a new one on.

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Well doing some more searching online, its looks like the reg is between the two rails, dead center of the engine. It also looks like you have to take off the intake manifold to get to. Does anyone know if this is true?

Re: 89 Cutlass Supreme stalling
Upper intake must come off.
