hey. im new to this site but have been trolling it for a while. for my birthday my dad got me a 1997 gt. it's got the 5sfe but its automatic. i know that "it's not worth it" but hey if i am gonna be driving the thing i want to make it the way i want. just wondering what all i would need and about how much it would cost. ive done this a couple times with some friends cars but never with a toyo. any input would be greatly appreciated

The easiest way would be to find and transplant an engine/manual transaxle from a donor car, including the ECM and harnesses. Maybe you can even make a deal with the local salvage yard to trade in your working engine/tranny. The Celica or Camry combo should work, but stay in the 1997-1999 year range if possible.

However, as you know, take note of the donor car's mileage and age (they track this info in their computers, but an eyeball on the dash helps)so you can get an idea of the condition of the "new" combo. Since it's out of the car, now's the right time to replace any worn parts: clutch, fork, throwout bearing, flywheel, etc.

k. so its just about the same as any other. just making sure. i know that toyo has done some wierd crap over the years. i owned a 1990 toyota half ton pickup... need i say more? thanks for the heads up. ill keep you all posted once i get the money lol

ive finally had enough with my automatic transmission in my 97 celica gt. i got ahold of a local place my family has been doing business with and theyre going to get me all the parts for a automatic to manual conversion. anything im going to need to know as far as little tricks or problems im going to run into?
