Cherokee Chief 1979, looking for advice!!

My chief still runs well but has been burning oil,I get a bad blue smoke cloud at start-up. I say she run well only because I enjoy working on all the little things that go wrong. I really love this old girl but need some ideas. I have only rebuilt a small 4banger never an 8. Is it worth my time to rebiuld or just look for something to drop in? Something with better GPM. I do still enjoy taking her out to play.

The engine may be fine, but you just need new valve guides and/or valve seals.
These FSJ's are getting pretty rare, so I think its worth keeping and fixing.

IMO take the heads off and send them out to be checked-out by a machine shop and repaired where necessary. You can also get a good look at the cylinder walls. If the ridge is modest, just put the repaired heads back on. The the ridge is huge, pull the engine and rebuild.
