Tranny Issue

My 04 Grand Am V-6 will shift fine when first started. After a few minutes or Higher RPM (Not sure which really) the shifts become hard. If put into park or reverse the shift is real hard. At stop with tranny in drive it sounds like a pump whining. If I shut the engine down and restart it goes away for a short time and shifts fine for a short time. Had the computer scanned and there are no fault codes. There are no indicator lights coming on. Any suggestions?

Re: Tranny Issue

How many miles on car? did you have it scanned at a trany shop? Have you checked the fluid level? Have you ever had trany serviced?

Your 04 trans should have the most recent updates, in 2003 GM made big changes to these tranys. Try and find out where the noise is coming from, right side, left side or rear part of the trans.

If you have over 100k miles, I would suggest trying a fluid & filter change if it hasnt been done within the last 50k miles. GM recommends to change every 50k miles, most dont untill problems arrise.

And if you had it scanned at autozone their scan tools wont read the trans codes. Advance auto might be able to, but your best bet would be a trans shop.

And ranclark, their is no dip stick to check fluid level on these transmission. It has a check plug on pass side of trans and you need a lift to check properly.

Hope that helps and keep us posted muff34 !

Re: Tranny Issue

I have about 55K on the transmission. I did have it scanned at Advance. The noise sounds like it is coming from the rear of the engine/tranny area but will stop if I put the car in park and get out to check the noise. Somebody mentioned a Pressure Control Solenoid. Does this sound right to you guys?

i would suggest getting a better scan or just take it to a trans shop to get it scanned.
Could be a solenoid, but the trany has to pretty much come out to replace them. Could also be the pump in the trany.
