towing a 1988 Trooper
Anyone know if it is okay to tow a 1988 Trooper II w/ a tow bar. It is a 4wd, manual transmission. Do not know if has auto or manual hubs (not my car (yet)).
Thanks! |

Re: towing a 1988 Trooper
Put trans and t-case in Neutral and disconnect the rear drive shaft.

Re: towing a 1988 Trooper
Why disconnect the rear driveshaft? The T case and manual trans both in neutral should do the trick, imo.

Re: towing a 1988 Trooper
It would be a short ride, just to get it from point A to point B for repair (bad rod). Maybe 30 miles, as a guess...
Thx. I might just call AAA and have them tow it.... |

Re: towing a 1988 Trooper
Even with the t-case in N, the DS is still turning parts inside that may not get lubed properly. Some t-cases (Toyota for example) actually connect the front + rear outputs (4WD) before disconnecting from the trans (N). (Shift pattern is 2H-4H-N-4L).
Disconnecting the DS is an added safety measure. I flat tow my 84 rockcrawler with my 2000 Trooper, I've learned a few things.

Re: towing a 1988 Trooper
The 88 trooper transfer case technically does not have a "neutral". A lot of people confuse the crossover between 4H to 4L as "Neutral", it really ain't. (there's a reason Isuzu didn't label the T/C shifter knob with a "N") It's just in between gears. I have 3 of them. If it's a short tow, just put the tranny in neutral and tow it. Don't go over 45-50 and you'll be fine. i towed one of my troopers 75 miles with a tow bar with no issues.
