2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
2000 Impala Heater fan speeds, Defogger and Information Center won't work when i first start my Car, yet after driving for a number of minutes it all will start working as i'm driving. Only lately starting doing this. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks....

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
I just resolved the same issue. We had a problem with the blower not coming on, cruise control not working, and the overhead display not on until several minutes after driving.
We took it to the dealership and it was the ignition switch. They replaced the switch and now everything works perfectly. Cost me $525 after tax including the diagnosis. |

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
Not many codes for a ign switch problem.
But may set codes for other prioblems. Do you have any codes? If so post back code no. Best test for ign switch is a good volt/ohm meter and check for proper ign switch power to everything.

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
The only codes i have are in the Haynes repair manual i have on my Impala. Ignition Control Circuit codes 41 & 42 Timing Circuit error and Bypass error. I don't have a diagnostic tool to check for these codes at this time, but i have seen these tools on sale at Walmart and Canadian Tire here at times. Might consider buying one next time a sale appears in one of their flyers.

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
41 and 42 are OBD1 codes for older modles up to 95.
Most parts places will read codes free for you. Got a Auto Zone close to you? But as said to check ign switch get outthe old volt/ohm meter.

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
Took the Dash apart in my 2000 Impala and checked the plug ins on the Ignition switch. Pulled on each wire for a broken wire. Unplugged the connectors then checked out the contacts and plugged them back in. Everything has been working great since, so i put everything back as it was. KNOCK ON WOOD for good luck!

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
Seems like the two bolts which hold the ignition in place were loose. After i tightened them all has worked properly since.

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
It ignition switch housing is a very common problem with GM cars. The spring tension on the contacts weaken resulting in high resistance (voltage drop) across the contacts. I repaired my ignition switch by prying off the black plastic cover (on the back of switch) exposing the contacts. I then use a 1/4" long #4-40 size nut & bolt to hold the contacts and spring together. It's now better than it was when new.

Re: 2000 Impala 3 problems at same time.
I've replaced several Impala ign switches for intermittent starting and dash display,a/c control issues. Probably not the best engineered switch out there. But usually what I see is key chains with about 5 pounds of junk on 'em swinging back and forth over the years. A friggin deadbolt wouldnt stand up to that! My wifes key chain practicaly drags on the mat!
