Does the new ABS computer need to be programmed?

The shop told me I need a new ABS computer, as the old one is throwing codes. I can get one for cheap and install it myself (very easy). However they said I'd need to bring it in for about an hour of work for them to program it. Does this make any sense? Are these ABS computers vehicle specific and need programming? What would happen if I didn't take it in for them to program it?

Re: Does the new ABS computer need to be programmed?

i just went through this with my 07 Ford Expo. I had to have it programed to the car. A buddy of mine did it on the side for $25.00. So, most probably it will have to be matched to the car.
Nothing will happen if you don't repair it, you just won't have a fuctional ABS and Traction Control system.
