2001 3.9 intake backfire
I have an 01 3.9 2X4 Dakota Quad Cab with 110,000 miles and today it started to lose power and backfire though the intake a few times. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you done anything to it, a tune up or disconnected the battery for a while?

When that happened to me it was determined that the computer was not connected properly and was moving around losing it's connection.

Put plugs, wires, cap and rotor on it a few months ago. The battery has never been unhooked since I bought the pickup 1 year ago.

i would pull cap off see if any moister in it and check the end of rotor button and see if it's burnt looking and the end that fires around distributer cap. or you may have to change intake gasket.

Re: 2001 3.9 intake backfire
I took the cap off and there is no moisture in it. I aslo checked all the little tabs around the inside the cap and they look good. The pin in the middle looks burnt. I can scratch it with my finger and it almost crumbles apart. Is it a different kind of metal? I know its not lead, but thats about how soft it is.

then it's probably fiberglass piston. when you start having trouble with those you got trouble and i never did care for them but some people do.
