First oil change at 37!!

I watched my dad change the oil in the car as a boy, but always took my car to someone else to change the oil in my own.

I'm interested in changing the oil in my '07 Taurus, but I was just wondering if that's a good idea, or should I just take it to someone? Also, if there were any tips and things to watch out for?

Re: First oil change at 37!!

Any more it's not really a cost savings to change your own oil. But it does generally give you peace of mind that the job is done correctly, or at least to your satisfaction and it avoids the hassle of having to refuse several add-on expenses such as cabin air filter, engine air filter, etc. Of course you want to check the engine air filter at each oil change along with the various fluids, but you probably don't need to replace them as often as a quick lube place might suggest.

Things to watch out for are of course safety items (jack, jackstands, ramps, safety glasses, etc.), having the correct tools (to remove the drain plug without rounding it off, removing the oil filter, checking other filters) and knowing how much oil the engine takes and using the correct grade. It's also a good time to check the tire pressure and check all the light bulbs.

Look for the oil change special, check the filter, oil being used, and the oil level when compete.
Too much oil, or the wrong viscosity could cause oil leaks.

Re: First oil change at 37!!

changing the oil yourself is only saving you about $5. I would take it to a shop, unless you want any special oil in it. Other than that a shop saves time, stress, and the mess.
