Two questions: Slow starter cranking? GM or remanufactured?
Freinds,
What is the root cause of a starter cranking slower than usual? The battery cables (on battery and starter) are clean, and the battery is in excellent condition. I've got a 99 Intrigue, and have already put on a couple of starters. And now it is slowing down again. I am on the cheap side, so I've bought the starters "One Time" at an auto parts store that guarantees "Lifetime Warranty". But now wondering if I should pay about 3X the original cost to buy an official GM starter? Any thoughts? thanks,

Re: Two questions: Slow starter cranking? GM or remanufactured?
Suburbanstevie -
For what it's worth, a couple months ago I replaced my 2000 Intrigue's original starter/solenoid with a Duralast unit from Autozone, for ~ $170 final cost. It's early days yet, of course, but so far so good. I have heard others say not to pinch pennies on starters. I'm hoping and assuming I did put in one that's good for another 10 years :-). If battery, cables, connections, and grounds are all really OK, and if the problem is not due to a low-quality starter that is actually worn out already, I don't know what else remains, unless there is a greater than normal load on the starter, due to some engine condition. One of the other guys could maybe address that.

Ever since it was replaced, the car starts up like brand new again. Wasn't even sure that was possible on a 10 year old vehicle. Obviously one or two experiences with a certain starter doesn't necessarily indicate a level of reliability, but so far so good. Hope i can get another three to five years and i'll be thrilled. |
