gas gauge not reading correctly

My gas gauge some time goes up and down all by itself. It seems to never read the correct amout of fuel. When the gas gauge reads 1/4 tank it is accually on E. and ideas

It could be the fuel pump, but could also be the instrument cluster. You need to look at GM recalls to see if your year/model is affected. The 02 and 03 I know was affected. I had to get my replaced. My speedometer and my fuel gauge starting erratically dancing randomly.
