Hi,

including extractors (headers) well, I would guess 15, no more than 20 hp. would you change the catylic converter too? getting a high flow cat could get you over 10 hp

so you're saying that by replacing the catalytic convertor i shall gain 10hp?? that's leaving everything else stock?
all this hp business.....get with the new metric system you yanks!! j/khow many kw=hp?? |

KW? dunno bout that. Well, I dunno about australia, but one way for the government to regulate smog and pollution is to SEVERELY limit the flow of exhaust coming out of your car. One way to do this is to put in a really restrictive catalyc converter. Now, I don't know how the laws are over there, but the best way to get some horsepower is to replace the catalyc converter with a test pipe. basically, this is just a pipe the same as your exhaust piping. so you eliminate your cat all together. Or, you can get a high flow catalyc converter, which should also make your exhaust more free flowing.

118kw stock standard b16a motor in aussie land
prob equivilent to 170hp according to your figures considering most 1.6l cars here puts out around 85kw, 118kw is mighty impressive!! |

There is no way headers and exhaust will gain an extra 15-20hp on a B16a2! Thats not even wishfull thinking, its more like an impossible dream.
At the most, you might get an extra 8hp peak. But that would be with some wild headers, and your loss's at low RPM would not be worth it. I would expect something closer to 5hp peak from a nice Mugan header and what ever exhaust you want to run, with a good boost to mid, and upper range torque. But nothing big, just enough to give you a very slight edge, maybe take a few hundredths of a second of the 1/4 time. The simple fact is that the stock headers are already pretty good, and dont leave much room for improvment. What you can do with aftermarket headers however is move the power band around a little.

Yeah, but I was also talking about a test pipe instead of the cat converter also. either a test pipe or a high flow cat converter.

America has far stricter emmission regulations than Australia and New Zealand, im not even sure if they have a Catalytic convertor and if they do it wont be as restrictive as an American one

Moves are afoot to follow the Californian model in Australia. The pollies are trying to bring in legislation that makes it mandatory to have an emissions test when you get your roadworthy certificate each year. Currently, if a police officer suspects your car of not meeting emissions, they can issue you with a slip that requires you to have an emissions test. You pay for it and if your car is missing the necessary emissions controls or if it fails to meet emissions then your registration is suspended.
This means that if you have a non-standard exhaust, intake box etc, you could run foul. It's not likely at all - I've run a few modded cars with no worries. But yeah, the possibility that our emissions laws will change is on the cards. Anyway. I have a similar engine in my SiR. Headers (Mugen copies) will set you back about 700 fitted from Croydon Autosports in Silverwater. A cat conv. and exhaust etc will probably be about another 500-600 fitted (depending on quality). Net HP *may* be between 5-7 @ the wheels, but I doubt it unless you do further mods. |
