1995 Eclipse GSX Questions

Hi my name is eric and Im thinking of getting a 1995 Eclipse GSX. It has 45,000 miles or so. Have any of you had any problems with this car or is there anything i should know about when i get it?

What kind of modifications will I need to get to make it run low13's? What will I get with intake/exhaust?

Is there any problems that you have had with yours after you bought your car? I read alot about people having problems with the transmission. Alot of people said its very crappy shifting? Whats bad about it and can it be fixed? I read that the gears slip sometimes. I also read about problems with the timing belt and water pump. Also read about crazy oil conomption.

How will I do on gas milage. Is it reliable and easy to maintain? How is the room in the car? Is the insurance going to be very expensive?

This will be my first car and I want to make sure I will be happy with it

Thanks

First car?

ah its your first car?
ah no offence but why not start small?
a GSX is going to cost a fortune to insure, unless you can get your parents to help you out. and look its your first car, odds are if its a fast car you are going to just kill yourself. start off small and then move up.
give your self a year on a slower car then move up. that way your insurance will be lower and you can then afford all the repair bills.
sorry to be a cock blocker but trust me, I have allot of friends who went out bout a fast as hell car and racked it. thank god they are ok and no one got hurt.

Here,

I'll try to answer some of your questions. To run low 13's on pump gas is more difficult on race gas. I'll assume you are going to run pump. First things first there are a ton of "upgrade paths" all over the net. Check some of those, www.roadraceengineering.com has one, prostreetonline.com has one, buschurracing.com has one. My advice, get a 1G BOV and upper IC pipe, K&N style cone filter, downpipe and cat-back exhaust, port your housings, boost controller, and most importanly a boost gauge, O2 gauge, and EGT gauge. If you are serious about tunning I recommend a pocketlogger as well (love mine, www.digitaltuning.com). With those mods and upping the boost and good driving high 13's low 14's are withing reach. Total cost depending on if you buy brand new name brand parts or shop around anywhere from $800-900 to $2000+

As far as reliability goes, 2G trannys shift like butter, the 1G's had all the grinding issues. Water pump and timing belt are maintenace items. CHANGE YOU TIMING BELT AT 58K miles or you will be sorry, head rebuilds arent cheap, water pump lasts till over 100K miles. DSM's like every other car only eat oil when the seals are bad, on a low milage engine like yours, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Gas milage is right at 20mpg in the city if you dont drive like a bat out of hell, the interior is what you would expect for a small car. As long as you don't do anything stupid the car will last as long as you keep it. Oh and if you do start modding, get a lot of tools, you'll need them

Insurance will kick your ass.

Peace
