2000 Chevy 4x4 A/C stopped working

My mother in law called today and said her a/c stopped working in her 2000 model silverado 1/2 ton 4x4. I borrowed some gauges from work, went home and hooked up, found that system had enough freon for compressor to kick on, but it would not. Checked fuses, they were good. Went to the auto parts and bought a clutch cycling switch and that did not help either. What else will cause the compressor not to come on?

Automatic or reg AC controls?
Have you checked all fuses for power both sides?
What was the pressure readings compressor off?
Jump compressor with a fused jumper and give us low and high side readings with compressor running.

Post back readings and if compressor runs jumped.

Re: 2000 A/C stopped working

The sytem has regular style knob controls. The gauges showed 120psi on the high and low side. Jumped the cycling switch connector and that did not work. I pulled fuses and plugged in another that I knew was good did not have any effect. However I can hear a clicking noise on the passenger side when I put the fuse back in.

do you have a voltmeter ? if not get one or go to a ac repair shop.

checking for voltage is the only way to locate this type problem..

AC COMPRESSOR NOT PUMPING ..

Well problem found now the fix part.
If jumped good with 12 volt power and grounded good and does not have to much sir gap and or burnt up or compressor locked up then your clutch/coil is bad.

Re: 2000 A/C stopped working

I found the problem. On these type models you can't see the compressor from the top and harldy from the bottom. I pulled the skid plates off and BAM there it was, the A/C drive belt was broken. My Carquest salesman put me on it, said this is a very common problem on these models. I did not know that there was 2 seperate belts running the accessories. The clicking sound that I told you about earlier was the clutch coil doing its job. It just will not work without a belt. Thanks for your help though.

yes , you are correct, that this requires a belt to work. If you were asked this question by a forum member you would be surprised at the response we have received in the past.

It is not a common problem that this belt fails as the only problem. make sure the idler and the bearings are good as these are the issues with this type low mounted ac compressor.
