Car started fine in the afternoon, drove it for about 15 minutes, stopped someplace. When I got back to car it wouldnt start. Doesn't crank @ all. Its a manual transmission and know that I have/had to depress clutch pedal down to get it to crank, and think this might have to do with it. The little grommet attached to the clutch pedal that presses up against a button under dash, seems to be gone. Thought it might have been this but this works in the opposite direction, meaning button gets depressed when I let go of clutch. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, would much appreciate it, thanx.
Note the relay has been replaced, the one that caused car not to start if it was too hot. Also replaced distributor, part of recall after car completely died out on me while driving, not a good thing. Thanx again! |

if it doest crank at all, then its generally an electrical problem, as opposed to mechanical. try and jump start it to begin with. if that doesnt do anything, get a multimeter and check the voltage at the switch with the clutch in and out. do this with the key in the start position to make sure the voltage should be different. also make sure the starter is getting power.

I have a '90 accord and i had the same promblem. It is something calle dthe main relay. You can go and buy it at the Honda dealer for like 50 buck. But that will fix it.

Thanx for replies...
Thought I had posted but it does start when you push car and "pop the clutch". As for the main relay thats what I had replaced a yr or so ago that would cause my car not to start (but did crank). I will check the voltage as stated by b16a3sol and see what I get. Would like to know if anyone can tell me, if it starting by push starting it, narrow down what it may be. Thanx again all. |

if it starts by push starting it i would say that its just a dead battery. it may still be the clutch switch, but i am leaning more towards the dead battery. i would assume the rest of the ignition system is still in good shape if it runs after push starting it.

I recently have had problems with the engine not firing when trying to start my accord. I found that when the car sat in the sun during the summer months and the inside temp got very hot the car would not start.
The problem was the Main EFI relay. Here is a link on how to fix your relay:http://www.markl.f9.co.uk/howto/elec...main-relay.htm or buy a new one.

Yeah, had that problem 1-2 years ago. Was a pain to troubleshoot that one, but did get it fixed.

main relay location and repair
Here is a even better site for Accords or other Honda models.
http://techauto.tripod.com/mainrelay.htm It has more details on how to find the main relay on the Accord. On my 1991 Honda Accords LX sedan: Driver side, under dash, behind the coin tray. Look under the dash. The main relay is hidden behind the cruise control unit/computer 5" X 3" metal box. It has a single mutiple wire connector and is held in place by two 10mm bolts. After removing the cruise control unit you will be able to see the bottom of the main relay. It has a wire connector also. The main relay is held in place by a single 10mm nut. A deep socket was needed for this. Was easy to fix but a pain to find. No trouble starting after parked in the sun for hours, hot hot hot inside temperature, starts like a champ. |
