neon automatic shift stuck in park

i went to the store and a few other places today, parked and got out of the car, restarted it just fine, and when i went to go somewhere later, i started the car, applied the brakes, and when i went to push the button on the shifter and shift into drive, the shifter would NOT budge, and the button would not depress.

there is no manual shift release button as some cars have, any causes/solutions for this?

Yes, they do light up.
