|
92 bonneville with heavy coolant leakage
i have a major coolant leak on the passenger side while my car is running and until it runs out of pressure(reservoir is emptying). i looked underneath the car without jacking it up, and couldn't quite tell where, exactly, it was coming from. but it's dripping off of the inner(towards the engine) a/c compressor case. also, i noticed that, right beside it, what appears to be a plastic cover for the crankshaft is cracked. it doesn't seem like there's coolant coming from it, but a little oil. it's kind of hard for me to believe that those two issues would have nothing to do with each other.
i've taken the pulley off of the water pump(which was replaced 5 years ago), and everything looked okay. i hope to jack it up and really get a good look tomorrow. any info or suggestions of things to look for would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

at this point, i'm pretty sure the leak is coming from the plastic cover behind the pulley for the crankshaft. i'm going to have to take it all apart and see if it is coming from the timing chain area. before i do so, can anyone at least tell me a little bit about the coolant circulation that's in that area? in my haynes manual, it tells me to disconnect the coolant hoses from the timing chain cover.

No it won't.... To the OP... Look under the alternator, you will see the bypass hose, you are either leaking from the bypass hose or the fitting in the lower intake... If its the fitting in the lower intake the replacement will be metal as opposed to plastic...

i took the alternator off to get a better view, and saw no evidence of leakage. looked at all of the hoses going to and fro, stuck my finger in every possible place it might potentially be leaking from, and felt nothing fresh. all the while, the gushing continues. thanks for your input.

and btw, to correct my earlier post, coolant is leaking out regardless of pressure. with the engine cold and the cap off, it's pouring straight out.

so, i finally got the timing chain cover off, and the coolant was coming from the timing chain cover gasket around the coolant passage on the right side from the water pump to the engine.
before i took the cover off, i tried tightening the bolts around that passage, and broke the one on the right off. so, unless someone can give me any advice on getting that out in such tight quarters, this car may be going to the junk yard. there's just a jagged edge where a bolt thread used to be.
