SRS light code 9-3 cheapo fix

According to my local Honda dealer as of about a year ago thy will no longer fix seat belts for electrical issues IE the switch in the buckle that causes the code 9-3. (They will still replace a seatbelt with a mechanical malfunction IE won't stay buckled). The quoted price to replace the driver’s seat belt buckle assembly was $300.

Un hook the battery except when testing!!!

What I did was take the plastic cover off the buckle using a T-10 tamper resistant torex bit (torex with hole in center) that allowed me to find the micro switch that detects the seat belt being inserted.

With the key on pressing the switch will make the seatbelt light (not SRS) go on and off. If some times you release the switch (gently) and seatbelt light does not come on than dirty contacts inside the switch is your problem.

If someone could find a way to buy an exact replacement for this switch then that would be great. However if Honda can sell the whole assembly for $200 than I don't think they will ever sell the switch separately.

I removed the tiny red rubber seal around the switch plunger with a sewing needle and sprayed in some crc electrical parts cleaner any worked the switch probably 200 times.

Then I tested the seat belt light again. This time it would always be on or off with the switch. I reassembled and reset the SRS light. Procedure is in the forum under another post.

Obviously removing the red seal will leave the switch more prone to contamination.

Re: SRS light code 9-3 cheapo fix

Sweet deal. I wasn't aware Honda stopped with life time warranty seat belt work. I guess it's electrical and they took a huge hit with the warranty extension on the V6 transmissions that absolute JUNK! I know the dealer we deal with doesn't do any more goodwill warranty work. Times are tough.

this is my 1st post so bear with me.
i saw this post and was wondering if the "9-3" code you were refeering to was the same i have. i removed my drivers side seat to clean my car and unpluged the wire connected the seat. after doing so the SRS light has been on ever since.

Did you reconnect it? In order to make sure it's 9-3 you will need to have the code pulled from the cars computers.

Re: SRS light code 9-3 cheapo fix

yeah i reconnected it. i was on the 7th gen civic fourm trying to find out more info on this. i learned that when you disconnect your seats you have to pull the srs fuse or disconnect your battery or the light will come on and stay on. there is a simple method for reseting the SRS codes tho. there is a yellow clip on the fuse pannel. just jump it out to reset. i'll find the post and link it.

edit: SRS code reset (title says only works for 99-01, but worked great on my 02 EX)
