Cool Finished: Two Tamiya Aston Martin DBS kits

I just completed my second Tamiya Aston Martin DBS. I built the first one for expanded review in Scale Auto; that one is painted Tamiya TS Ferrari F1 light mica red and built completely OOB. It’s a typical “shake and bake” Tamiya kit with virtually no hassles, and inspired me to build a second DBS.

The second is painted in an “Ocean Blue” concoction that I mixed from various decanted Tamiya sprays. In the spirit of using Ferrari parts on an Aston model (you may have seen my Ferrari 458 with aftermarket optional DBS wheels), this one got a set of aftermarket 20” BBS Challenge wheels intended for a Ferrari 599 GTB. I shot these in Spaz Stix new ultra chrome over Tamiya TS gloss black. This is a very durable and bright finish, I like it much better than Alclad. I’ve handled the wheels quite a bit and the polished look remains and didn’t wear off whatsoever.

Here's the one in the latest issue of Scale Auto:

Re: Finished: Two Tamiya Aston Martin DBS kits

Yet another beautiful build Bob!! Cant wait to ready about it.
Love the Colour!!! Is that Tamiya TS Insignia White on the seats?
The wheels look great, Although just looking at it they look a little small in the wheel arches, & thats saying something considering they are 20"s!!
But definetly Sex on Wheels!!!

Nice work, Bob! I like the color combo. One thing: you chose manual transmission, but used the decals for the automatic gear selectors on the dash.

Hello Bob,

an unusual but beautiful color for the Aston Martin. Nice, clean build as always.
One thing, though: the BBS challenge wheels look tooo small :-(

Thanks! I prefer the blue one. I might swap out wheels/tires on the red one for a more aggressive appearance. I have another set of aftermarket DBS wheels that I might use on the red one. Really stupid fact: Hobby Design's DBS wheels are made with female mounts. The Tamiya DBS has male mounts. Stupid, stupid, stupid

On the blue one I used a couple of large sheets of thin kitchen foil coated with Microscale's foil adhesive. Each side was one large piece trimmed to fit so there would be no visible seams. There was some cleanup required to remove the adhesive residue. It worked a bit better than the Bare Metal Foil used on the red one.

Thanks! The BBS wheels scale out properly, Tamiya's DBS wheels/tires are oversized, especially the tire profile (they used R35's tires, Enzo tires would have been better). Lower profile rubber on their stock rims would help.

Re: Finished: Two Tamiya Aston Martin DBS kits

Yeah, I wish Hobby Design has issues despite good product offerings. I think they released the DBS wheels before the kit was introduced. I wish they would wait until after release and test-fit. Would be nice too, if the wheels were sized to the kit tires, so I wouldn't have to hunt down spare tires and raid other kits. Convenience over accuracy in this case!

Very beautiful.
I love the finish and the chrome trim looks fantastic.

Oh, and I'm a sucker for a DBS. One of the most beautiful cars ever, IMHO...

Re: Finished: Two Tamiya Aston Martin DBS kits

They're both just lovely. I think the foil for the brightwork gives both models that snap that can't be replicated by paint. Well done. Would be interested to view the blue version with the Hobby Design Aston Martin Optional wheels.
