wheel hub replacement?

03 Silverado 1500 5.3 120,000 - When I brake in a parking lot/going slow usually when making a turn my abs kicks in. Im guessing that means a wheel hub is going and moving on turns losing the signal from the abs sensor? All original front end components, never changed anything on the front or rear end other than brakes/rotors.

pull the front ABS wheel speed sensors. inspect the grease color . it should be a bluish grease. if rust/red colored it is the bearing failing. if the ABS mounting surface is rusted this may have forced the sensor out of position , this now farther from the hub toothed wheel will also cause this. then the cable may have gotten into the brake rotor..

disconnect the sensor connector and spin the hub you should get 380milli volts AC. my new hub puts out .5volts or 500milli volts ac.

less than 350 milli volts this is bad..

1A auto has these hubs less than 100.00. made in taiwian

Re: wheel hub replacement?

If you do have to replace the hub assembly get a good one. Price a Timken at local parts stores. I paid $165.00 and took me about three hours to replace using hand tools. Use good sockets. I broke a chinese 16mm socket and learned my lesson. I spent about an hour searching for a replacement and borrowing one from my neighbor. Really took about 2 hours of work. I researched the repair in forums and watched a video of the job on youtube. Now I'm changing my own oil, front rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, spark plugs and cables etc. If something goes wrong I know the guy to blame

My hub symptom was a groan/grinding noise in left hand turns. Meant the right hub going out. I pulled the assembly and it turned rough and made grinding noise. The replacement was smooth turning. I suspect I did the damage when I hit a curb hard in a parking lot. don't go cheap on something you count on you and your family to get somewhere safe in. My two cents.
