Does your fuel pump not get power or just stops working sometimes? How many miles? Check this thread for some thoughts. Can search "fuel pump" for more.

Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

it has 152000 km the power stops going back to the fuel pump we checked the power at the reset and its not getting to it so something at the front is shutting the power flow to the pump

Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

I don't know how easy this would be.....but maybe check to see if you have power at the relay contact that goes out to the fuel pump?
If not.....check the power "IN" contact at the fuel pump relay........
If you have power at the fuel pump relay contacts when you should.....then at least you know you have power up to that point.
If you have power going IN to the relay....but not out.....then check and see if the relay is energizing?........

A wiring diagram will be most useful.......verify where you have power and where you do not.
Starting at the relay will enable you to go a direction from that point.......

A loong shot ... but the PCM relay also feeds the fuel pump

Would a fault in the egr system cause the van to up and quit when it gets up to temp it seems to be ok at cool temp but when it gets warm it quits and all you have to do is turn the key off then back on and away you go you dont even have to stop the van just drop it in nute andshut it off then start again

Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

Sure sounds like a failing fuel pump to me. I just went thru the same symptoms. I changed a number of things before I finally dropped the tank .....

New pumps are not always good pumps.

Talking Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

Food for thought. I have a "Christine" nightmare 1995 Windstar that I've been chasing problems on for 3 years. What I have boiled down to is a problem in the PCM wiring harness itself. The ground circuit is shorting somewhere.

I would isolate the wires that lead to the fuel pump and see if you can continuity test for ohms from the front, somewhere in engine bay to the rear where the fuel pump connector is. On my 1995 van the fuel pump connector is in the rear driver underside I think not too far from the fuel filter. You'd have to run a heck of a jumper wire to continuity test back that far, but its certainly doable.

I am not sure about this next idea, but someone correct me if I'm wrong. Could a loose ignition (where you turn the key) cause a problem like the one fdgirl is seeing? IE: If the PCM doesn't know the van is on..or shorted there at the ignition.

Besides that I would clear any/all PCM faults before proceeding with other problems. Your EGR may be clogged or other problems with it.

Other than that, fuel pump going out is certainly possible at that age in miles, but it depends on how much time the fuel pump spent beneath gasoline vs above it. If it stayed below the gas for most of its life, then its probably not the pump. You'd know this by if you are the only owner and if you have most of the time kept the gas above 1/4 tank.

Hope that helps. GOOD LUCK!

Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

Searcherr's post reminds me of a trauma I went thru on my '99 early on in ownership ... obvious electrical problems, poor driveability, etc ... the dealership tried, but never found the problem. It was a bit "come and go" ... but one event was so bad, had wife and I wondering if we would make it back home. I committed to myself if we did get back home ... I would not leave the driveway again until I found the problem!

Armed with an electrical shop drwg set, I began checking each wiring harness with anything to do with the power train... end to end ... pin to pin. Eventually I found the problem .. the main harness feeding the PCM was rubbing against the firewall. Mine had worn such that three conductors (the harness had 70 conductors inside) would be grounded as the car bounced just so. I repaired the harness, making photos all the time. Carried the info back to Ford,... this was late in 2000 probably ... big excitement!! It depended on the "wrap" of the harness if there was to be an issue... perhaps caused by different installers ... not all harnesses rubbed ... we checked several Windstars in the lot to prove it was a low probability event ... but a few others had the problem.

Ford corrected the problem by changing the harness routeing ... but I don't remember exactly when.

Re: 2001 windstar quits while driving

my 2002 ford windstar has been dying for the last 3 months. It gives no warning when it dies. It will not start unless you turn the switch off. If you turn it off and turn it over it will start immediately. I have changed the fuel pump, filter, fuel pump relay, crank sensor, cam sensor, throttle position sensor and the PCM relay. I have read complaints from others who say it started after they changed the alternator. I had my alternator rebuilt but it was a while before my problem started. If you find your problem please let me know.
