is this a good price.

a mechanic told me he would change my fuel pump for 160 dollars. does that seem like a fair price to you guys that are familar with cars. he is going to change it in front of my house, since my old fuel pump died and i can't drive the car. and that doesn't include part cost.

Re: is this a good price.

It is about a 2 hour job assuming no rusted parts. 88 we assume?

yes, its an 88.
also the gas tank was halfway full before the pump went bad, do you think that it will be too heavy?

Re: is this a good price.

The tank can be removed like that if on a lift and a trans jack supports it while dropping it down.

Re: is this a good price.

For me it's a bit higher. Try to bargain a bit lower to the mechanics. Hope you will get a good deal.

Question Re: is this a good price.

What does "for me it's a bit higher mean"?

thanks man, im going into this blind so when he said 160 i tried my best to mask any facial expressions. i wasn't sure if i was getting ripped off, or if he was giving me a really good deal. i think i'll ask a few more mechanics before he starts just to see what they say. hopefully some people from this site can chime in too.

Re: is this a good price.

Seems very fair to me considering he is coming to your house to do the work. Not sure if many other mechanics would be willing to do that. If you had to tow it to a shop, you would probably be out $100 just for the tow. Hopefully, he won't have to run after parts or tools to get it done.

Doesn't seem too bad to me, it is certainly not a nice job to do on the street...

Re: is this a good price.

its not a great deal, i'm sure you could do better but when you add towing???
if you call around you might find a better price(if you get it to them )so its up
to you & your $$$$ situation. i would'nt want the job really no fun on an older car
plus on your back
good luck

Re: is this a good price.

Not a great deal? I would charge you more than that....

Most shops will not let you get away on a fuel pump replacement for anything less than $400-$600.... Don't care what year the car is...

$160 is not bad, and if that includes the fuel pump it would then be a great deal...
