FYI: worked on an idea, and it worked out (for me)

I have been wrestling with my transmission tunnel as well as the ability to fill it when changing fluid - so, I finally decided to cut my tunnel in 3 pieces - top and 2 sides, welded some flat stock on the back, nut inserts and now I have a very removeable tunnel when the need arises -- no more taking out the seat(s) to do any type of work.

Just FYI....

Devin,
I think that is a great idea. I think I'll do it in aluminum while I'm at it.

I made a new 3 piece tunnel out of 24ga sheet metal. I think it must be 500lbs lighter then the original tunnel.

Now thats a great Idea. The gasket material for the front of the tunnel ,we used fiberglass packing rope from a fireplace shop. Glued it in place and works great.

I made one for Jimimac and I don't think he's put it in the car yet. Maybe he can post up a couple of pics.

Re: FYI: worked on an idea, and it worked out (for me)

I like the idea of making refilling the tranny easier.

During my quest to remove weight from the Panoz I remade the tunnel from sheet alum. I didn't go to the extent of making it multi-peice (which sounds like a great idea!), since I also removed the passenger seat to save 32 lbs (with harness removed too). I used weather strip to make the seal to the interior, and insulated the inside with some of that hi-tech multi-layer aluminum. Holding up pretty well so far.

No need for heat shielding in the roadster. Nice and cool inside.

Hey David,

Since I can't get the guys with the setup to post pictures I thought I would ask the guy who does not have it in the hopes you have the pictures?

OK...OK....Enough with the begging.....

I have an aluminum one piece tunnel that I very simply added an access panel right where the fill hole is and you can remove the panel with a screw driver. A little heat mat on the drivers side and your set. K.I.S.S. words to live by!!!
