Can't weld in CATS?
I went to three muffler shops and was told that due to the CAT (pass side) being two close to the trans, it can't be welded in place. Only a Y-pipe can be installed. The two CATS cost me $200.00, Y-pipe is $434, I'm not rich. Is there anyone out there that can tell me if I can only get a Y-pipe on the 2004 Tahoe with 5.3, and 4x4.

Re: Can't weld in CATS?
That's exactly what I said. Then the price went up by like $150. I said forget it, I'll get the y pipe and they will lose the business. Thanks

Re: Can't weld in CATS?
Just cut out the old one and clamp the new one in place.
I had the my Y pipe break at the manifold. I just cut that out and went to the Junk yard and pick up the pipe and bolted it in with a u bolt and a larger pipe connection over the cut. This was on a 99 ans still working 4 years later. Shops want like $1k to do the job as the Y pipe cost about $750 or more. Cost me less than $15 for the pipe, connector and 2 U bolts. ![]() Or you can use:
