Front Differential shaft seals

Anybody replaced these on their truck? On my 05 Silverado Z71 I noticed the end of the shafts where the cv shafts bolts up are a little wet from diff fluid. I was wondering if its a tough job to do in the driveway. Anybody have the dealer or mechanic do it and how much $$$?

one drop of 80-90wt gear oil is much larger than it appears with these type leaks. being a little wet is normal. when it drips on the ground then take action to replace. its not easy to do in the drive way.

check your fluid . it may need replacing . it should be yellow not gray.

also check the vent hose for proper venting. if its restricted it will blow out the seals.

I am replacing fluids this weekend. Front and rear diffs, transfer case and transmission. With almost 100k on the truck its time for some preventative maintenance. I will check vent hoses for sure. No drips yet just wet. I will keep my eye on it. Thanks Jcat.

Well my drivers side front diff seal is starting to leak and leave drip on the driveway. Has anyone tackled this job? I am going to do both sides but was just wondering how long it takes and if there are any tips or tricks to make the job go smooth.

WEO, did you complete this job? How long did it take? How difficult was it? Any tips?

Wagslick yes I did this job...twice. The first time used a seal from NAPA and it turned out to be the wrong one. In the description for the seal it designated regular or extended cab. So the second time around I purchased a seal from the dealer. As for the job it is pretty straight forward. Drained the transfer case, took the wheel off and used an impact gun to get the bolts out of the flange. I moved the CV shaft over to clear the way for the shaft in the transfer case to come out. I used a piece of angle and bolted it to the flange and used a Vise grip on a slide hammer to get the shaft out. 2-3 good blows and it comes out. Used a 2 jaw puller to get the seal out. Put the seal in with a flat piece of round stock slightly larger in diameter then the seal to make sure the seal was flush with the case. After seal was installed slid the shaft back in and tapped it with a rubber mallet until it seated in the spring clip. Then just reinstalled the bolts in the CV shaft flange, filled the case and no more leak. Sorry for the long post. Any more questions feel free to ask.
