Chevy 350 Indentification

Ok, heres the story... i have a 1985 El Camino. A few years back. the original 305 took a turn for the worse and I needed to swap in a new motor. Well i ended u finding a local place that was selling reman blocks for cheap bc there were a diesel company that bought out an unleaded engine reman company. I was alot younger at the time and so all i knew what that i bought a 350 that would bolt up to all my 305 stuff.

Now i have had the motor in the car for many years, and i have no idea what engine model it is... L98, LM1, L05? no idea. I have no idea where to look for the casting codes? and i dont want to tear the motor apart to try n find it.

Is there anyway to know by just knowing that all my acces and stuff swapped from the 85 305? I have been trying to find this out for almost a year to no avail.. any help would be great.

yeah i have looked at the site, and it has some great information... but it says that the code is Machined pad in front of the passenger side cylinder head. Often hidden by the alterator."...

does anyone have a picture of this location? or even a basic picture that they drew in an arrow to point to it.. haha. i wanna figure out what i am really running under this hood

Re: Chevy 350 Indentification

Casting numbers on the block and head will give you what you need, (Mortec) they are temporarily off line.

Block casting #'s are on the drivers side rear of the block.

Yes you'll need to remove the alt to see the pad (part of the block) just in front and below the pass side head. The #'s are stamped into the pad and are more of a VIN derivative to further narrow down what this engine is out of.

Too bad Mortec is not working as it was a great site for this info.

Re: Chevy 350 Indentification

not to be a pain in the A** but does anyone have a picture of this "pad" thats on the front of the engine... so i know exactly where to look for it... my alt is hard to get on and off due to some aftermarket hard fuel lines and intake...
