2000 Cavalier stalling

I have recently been having some problems with my cavalier. Its a 2000 and has about 110,000 miles on it.

This all started a few weeks ago as follows. The car ran fine when in motion. When stopping at a light, while still in gear with brake depressed, the oil pressure light came on and the temperature gauge started to rise. After a while, the car would stall out in standing traffic (temp would run about 3/4 to max). I checked the oil and it is full. I have taken it to a mechanic (unsure about how reputable they are) and they said everything is working fine. They could not get the car to "act up" and returned the car a week later. I would imagine the shop just threw it in idle and it ran fine so they returned it. They said the oil pressure is fine and supposable the cooling fan is kicking on and off as it should.

I got the car home and sure enough, 15 minutes after driving, the oil light came on and I could get it to stall out during stops. The car seems to idle ok and the temperature guage seems to remain normal now (oddly enough) prior to stalling. I got it home, let it idle for a few minutes, then threw it in reverse and it stalled. So what is going on here???

Re: 2000 Cavalier stalling

Whats causing it could be endless. Is the service light on. Have you checked for any codes that will tell you what the car is telling you whats wrong. Autozone, advance auto, etc all will check the codes if your dash light is on. could be tps, iac ,sensor, etc may take some tracking down.
I;m assuming auto trans by post. acts up warm. only in gear not if you just let it idle in park?? How warm??. How Cold? does it stall more if you are driving along and quickly apply brakes.what about restars after stops?? sluggish or quick?? Fuel filter done?? Pressure good?? As you can see need more info. I've seen somethig as simple as needing plugs cause all kinds of symptoms..

Re: 2000 Cavalier stalling

Can't say any codes showed up, if so they did not trip off the check engine light. This is an automatic transmission. The car does NOT have problems with idle. The stalling only occurs when in gear or when switching from neutral to gear. Typically the car can be restarted with little trouble, but if the temp guage is running a little hot (between 1/2 and 3/4 max temp), it can have a sluggish restart. Again the car does NOT stall while in motion. The problem occurs during prolonged stops at lights, while still in gear. Depressing the brake quickly vs. slowly does not seem to have any affect as far as I have seen. It seems to be more related to slowing the car down to a slower idling speed. I have not had fuel filter checked yet, but will most likely have that done next.
Any other thoughts?
