4L60e Trans Fluid Change

How much trans fluid should I buy if I just drop the pan and change the filter?

8 quarts?

Also its Dexron III, right?

Does Valvolie do good in this trans?

I've heard to stay away from synthetics.

Re: 4L60e Trans Fluid Change

Book says 5 qts but get 6 on safe side and fill it up to it reads in crosshatch area hot.

Dexron 111 has gone by wayside.

You can get mercon/dexron from Carquest or go the new gm fluid.

GM dumped the dexron III spec because these trannys failed because this fluid was not strong enough to handle the heat ..fluid turns to acid too quickly ..dexron VI is the replacement..this is well known fact..

came out in the 2005 year...any dexron III today, sold has NO GM SPEC ON IT !

I use mobil synthetic transmission fluid on my 2000silverado and the 96 impala ..began using this synthetic back in 1998..glad I listened to my aircraft enginner friend ..no tranny problems or any leaks ..good fluid ..

on an old vehicle why spend alot for the high quality stuff. damage is done //too late now ! auto zone dexron III is very cheap cost ..

Re: 4L60e Trans Fluid Change

Thanks guys. No damage done yet to this trans that I know of. It shifts just fine and I'd like to keep it that way. The fluid in it smells good, not burnt or dark. Just a little more orangeish than red, so I think its time for a change.

Where can I find Dexron VI? Becuase I know the new GM synchromesh trans fluid is spendy spendy (if that is what your referring to jcat)

Thanks Guys!!!

Re: 4L60e Trans Fluid Change

I am not J-cat but the GM synchromesh trans fluid is Gm fluid for standard transmissions.

Gm Dexron V1 is gm new fluid for automatic transmissions.

The dealer has it in There gm brand and oil companys/parts places should have it in there brands.
But none is cheap and going up all of the time with gas prices and oil spills.
Reg oil is hitting 3 QT and good syn oil is about double or more that.

Thanks Guys!!!

last year I used the synchromesh manual transmission fluid in the 94 S10 5 SPeed manual tranny...got fluid at auto zone pennsoil , not that expensive ...after replacing the dexron III that the transmission called for on the owners manual , we found the synchromesh worked much better..easier shifting at all temps a good improvement..

Its been a very long time since I have used dexron III in a AUTOMATIC 4L60 TRANNY. even so I remember how the shifting speed increased , there is a difference for sure. the slow shifting of dexron III is why GM got hit with all those warrantee costs ..that is why the GM spec is not on any dexron III made today ..

Re: 4L60e Trans Fluid Change

Thanks guys, I was going to change the trans fluid, but then had a brake issue, so the trans will have to hold off unfortunatly.

One other question though, are there any trans pans you quys wold recommend? I'd like to add one with a drain plug, but would rather not pay an arm and a leg for it. Aluminum would be nice but not necessicary.

What are some good brands and your opinions of each? If I could find one with a drain plug that holds extra fluid, for under 100 bucks, I'd probably go for it.

the deep pan used on my 2000 SIL holds 1.5qts more fluid than the shallow pan . the deep has the drain plug which removes most but not all fluid . still it makes servicing the transmission much easier.
the deep pan will require a deep pan tranny filter. do not use the shallow type. the deep pan filter has a plastic base. this has little plastic feet that touch the pan bottom. the fluid is picked up about 1 inch above the bottom of the pan . this reduces the debris from getting into the filter media. 5qts is what a pan drop would require ..with this type.
