Transmission Temps temp Gauge

i got a 1997 4x4 350ci . I would like to put a trans temp gauge on it. my question is, where do intall the sending unit at? I have not bought a gauge kit yet i would love to here some suggestion on what kind to buy..I dont want to spend no more than a 100.00. nothin fancy just a good one,..thx jeff

I added one to my 97 and shopped around some.
Most that were shown to me had the numbers too compressed to read easily.
But I discovered the one from B&M at a speed shop.
It was not expensive, and easy to read, color coded face makes it even easier.
BTW B&M is the tranny build up specialists.

Most work good when installed into the transmission oil pan.
Just be sure you miss the filter and valve body and solenoids and wiring when you install in
the pan.

The transmission also has a built in temperature sensor to VCM that could be tapped or temperature read out with a transmission/engine capable scanner.

For the 4L60E transmission, there is a fluid pressure test port located on the driver's side just above and in front of the shift linkage, plugged with a 1/8" NPT plug. The temperature sender can screw right in there. Although putting it into the pan would let you use it as a drain plug, you'd have to weld in a bung for it...not an option for most of us shadetree mechs.

Most gauges are in the $50-$70 range. Pep Boys has the cheapest by SunPro @ $40 for a basic black 1/4-sweep face. I had bought it and a silver/white 1/4 sweep Autometer Pro Comp gauge for $55 but ended up returning the SunPro because it appeared that one's sender went in deeper into the tranny case than the Autometer's. I didn't want to risk it hitting anything inside and could find no docs as to what was the allowable depth limit, so I played it safe.

I went to a 4x4 shop and i was talking to the parts man,he said the best way is to get your temp reading off the return line from the cooler,is this true?? He recommened a B&M and you cut the low pressure side and go from there!! he claimed that by having the sending unit mounted in the xmission case i would get erractic readings from the touque converter heating up and cooling down..he claimed it would drive me nut!!! thx for any more in put please...jeff
