Question 2000 Cavalier 2.2 slips when shifting

My 2000 Cavalier has the 2.2 engine and is an Auto transmission. It has been slipping when shifting, but this only seems to occur when the car tries to down shift. Normal highway driving I have no problems even with down shifting for the most part.

The slipping seems to happen most whenever the car leans when going around turns, when I go over bumps (ie speed bumps), or when coming to a stop. Oddly the slipping seems to be less of an issue when I have a full tank of gas, not sure if this is actually related. Also the slipping seems to happen much less when the car is cold. But as I drive and the engine warms up, the slipping seems to happen more.

Not sure where to go with this, I have several friends with the same model cavaliers that have had motor mounts go out on them and cause problems but the shifting is not very hard in my car so I'm not sure if that's my problem.

Any advise is appreciated, let me know if you need more info.

Re: 2000 Cavalier 2.2 slips when shifting

Hey, not sure if this is the same problem I'm having, but when you mentioned that it usually doesn't happen when the tank is full, I thought I'd throw this out there.... Last week I posted the below thread regarding my old fuel filter, and while mine is a manual and no one has responded saying my guess of the fuel filter causing this is correct, you never know... good luck!

'98 2.2 Could old fuel filter cause this?

Of course we all know the pain of replacing the fuel filter on our generation of Cavaliers, so I haven't had mine replaced in probably 8-9 years...anyway....Now I'm noticing in the last couple months that sometimes it feels like my transmission is slipping - but I know it's not the transmission because it's a manual. It's just that all my previous cars were automatics and had tranny probs with all of them, you know, feeling like there's a slip or a hesitation when the foot is on the gas, and this is what I'm now noticing with my Cav. So right away I'm thinking it's that dirty old fuel filter, but maybe not? Anyone else experience this? And if so, did the "slipping" or intermittent & random hesitation go away once you replaced the filter?

Thanks!
