1988 Cutlass Ignition

My son owns a 88 Cutlass and his key just turns completely around in the ignition. Is the ignition set up with a rod to engage the starter or is it more an electric type start. I ask this because after attempting to fix( read total carnage!!) I was unable to diagnose. This has gone from a broken ignition to needing a new steering column!!! The reason I ask is that his car was unable to shut off. He ended up getting car to shut off but it the ignition is still locked in an on position. I thought that if it had a rod type start I could at least start and drive home. I was unable to do this and caused enough damage to replace entire steering column. Thanks for any advice. I just thought if it had a rod type start I could have gotten it home. Instead an overworked Ironworker with a few basic tools on hand at the time wrecked total havoc!

Check the info at autozone .com repair guides, when registering your car info go to the steering section I believe the info for the switch is there.
